Center on Halsted Facade Restoration
Historic Terra Cotta Facade Restored for Chicago’s New LGTB Center

MIA provided research, documentation, existing conditions survey, and facade restoration of this highly ornamental terra cotta and brick facade. The facade was dismantled and reconstructed to correct adverse conditions and incorporated into the new LEED certified community center designed by Gensler.

Designed by David Saul Klafter and built in 1924, the building was originally known as the Sexauer Garage and is noteworthy for its polychrome terra cotta, particularly the winged wheel motif that advertised the building’s original use.
