In need of repairs, McGuire Igleski carefully documented and designed repairs to meticulously restore the facade of the elaborate two-story terra cotta Krause Music Store to its distinctive original condition. Detailed repair work also included restoring the upper-story leaded glass windows and repairing the tile at the storefront entry. The restoration was guided by McGuire Igleski’s work, which included an extensive existing conditions assessment with prioritized recommendations, construction documents, and construction administration services.

Constructed in 1922, the Krause Music Store building was designed by architect William Presto in collaboration with architect Louis Sullivan in Sullivan’s last commissioned work. Sullivan designed the building’s intricate terra cotta façade, articulating the architect’s influential Sullivanesque style illustrated by lush intertwining foliage combined with sharp-edged geometric figures. The unique façade, completed in a monochromatic soft green terra cotta, differentiates it from the adjacent, more conventional storefronts. The building became a City of Chicago Landmark in 1977 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
